Welcome To 1st Grade

Dear Parents,
I am happy to welcome your child to my classroom. First grade is a very important year. Your child will learn many new skills that will help them in the future. The following is a list that might help you to understand about the routine and discipline plan that will be used in my class this year. Please take a few minutes to look over this page, if you have any questions please let me know.

(Your child will receive letter grades for the work that they complete this year.)

Accelerated reader –(AR)

This year your child will be required to read AR approved books and take a test on them. This will also be 20 % of their reading grade. I have set a schedule to insure that they read the required AR books to reach a certain goal. Your child will check out a book in the library (Mrs. Irwin will help them check out a book)or they will read AR books in my room. When they are finished reading the book a few times, they will take a test on it over the computer, either in my class or in the library. This will check, assess and track their comprehension and vocabulary skills during the year. Each child's AR goals will be different and will be based on their current reading level per 9 week period, using the star reading test administered every month. This test is designed to show each students independant reading level.  Every child that reaches their set goal for the nine weeks will be rewarded. (Last year they rewarded the students with a movie and a treat). Every child that reaches his/her goal for the year will receive an extra reward. Last year my entire class was able to go to McDonalds and then to the park. AR is a fun and exciting way for students to improve in reading. I am excited and can not wait to introduce your child to this program. If you have any questions, please feel free to visit with me.
